The Importance of Voting

So The election is coming up. I'm 18 so I'm excited to say that I will be a first time voter! Naturally, the election has been a common topic between my friends and I.  Between my friends who can vote, the diversity of votes is pretty split down the middle. About half say Obama and the other say Romney. Personally I still dont know who I'm voting for. Last week it was Obama and this week it's Romney. But then when I talk to some of my friends, they say they aren't going to vote. when I ask them why it is either "I don't care who wins" or "If I vote I get put into the system and I'll have jury duty and all that". Then I get frustrated and a half hour argument ensues. So to portray my view on the subject, here is an open letter to people who dont want to vote.

Dear Lazy Voters,

So what if you dont care who wins? I know you have some preference between the candidates. No matter how small the difference is, utilize your right to vote! So few people in the world actually have a say in the person who leads their country. And we are fortunate enough to be able to live in this great county where we have the ability to give our opinion on who would do a better job leading us. According to google, the US currently holds about 5% of the people in the world. So if you had 100 people, only five of them would be american. Adding into account on the other countries who can vote, in some way, that number would probably raise to ten-ish people. So lets say one in ten people can vote. You are one of the one in ten. Just think on a statistical level how unlikely it is that you were put into this position and you want to pass it up?!?! Sure voting may seem like an everyday thing because you are used to it, but it's not.
The part that annoys me the most is when you complain about the current president and his/her actions when you didn't vote! You dont have the right to complain unless you vote. So if you vote and the newly elected president is doing things you dont like, go ahead, you earned the right to complain by voting. Otherwise you're just some person who complains all the time, but never does anything about it.

So if you are old enough, use your voting privilege. It only comes once every four years. You dont want to miss it.

Best Wishes,
Blake Kotrla
